WilmerHale Achieves Significant Victory for Samsung in Patent Infringement Defense

Client News

A team from WilmerHale achieved a significant victory for its client Samsung in a trial result in the Eastern District of Texas before Judge Rodney Gilstrap.

Vasu Holdings LLC had asserted multiple patents against Samsung and sought over $150 million in damages. After a five-day trial, the jury awarded Vasu just $3 million—only 2% of what it demanded—and found infringement on only one of the three patents that reached trial.

Vasu originally sued in 2024 asserting six patents related to certain techniques for seamless cellphone roaming and broadband connectivity, and accused devices within Samsung’s Galaxy smartphone series and wireless local area network products of infringement. At trial, Samsung held the damages exposure to a fraction of the amount sought.

The WilmerHale team was led by Mindy Sooter, Mark Selwyn, Dom Massa and Brittany Amadi, and included Alice Ahn, Alison Burton, Arthur Coviello, Sydney Donovan, Sarah Frazier, Mike Gustavsen, Matt Hoff, Vikram Iyer, John Kim, Jorge Kina, Stan Maderich, Hannah Maniscalo, Lornie Martinez, Chip O’Neill, Danny Perry, Matthew Phelps, Genesis Romero, Hannah Santasawatkul, Kate Saxton, Dennis Wang, and Cecily Winmill.
