Small States – Disaster, Disruption & Resilience

London, UK
Signature Event

Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, the Institute of Small and Micro States (ISMS) and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) are delighted to invite you to an all-day event on disaster, disruption and resilience. The conference is the ninth in our series on issues relating to small states and will be co-hosted by Partner Steven Finizio.

Steven Finizio will also chair the keynote discussion featuring Justice Philip Jeyaretnam and Partner Franz Schwarz will speak on the panel “Dispute Resolution as Disruptor and Resilience Measure.”

Conference Overview

Many small states are particularly vulnerable to disasters and disruptions due to their limited resources, geographic isolation, and high exposure to natural hazards such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and rising sea levels. These challenges are compounded by economic constraints and dependencies on external markets, making recovery from disasters more difficult and protracted. In times of global disruption, such as pandemics or economic shocks, small states can also face amplified impacts, as their size limits their ability to buffer against external forces.

However, small states are also known for their adaptability and resilience, often leveraging strong community ties and innovative approaches to overcome adversity and build back stronger. Addressing these vulnerabilities requires tailored strategies that enhance their capacity to respond, recover, and thrive in the face of growing global uncertainties.

The 9th small states conference will address innovative solutions, share best practices, and explore how small nations can build resilience to safeguard their communities and economies. We will also address disputes relating to the issues caused by disasters and disruptions.

The conference will be hosted at the offices of WilmerHale in London and will be followed by a drinks reception. We acknowledge and appreciate the support of the University of Canterbury which has helped make this event possible.
