Former US Attorney John Walsh Rejoins WilmerHale After US Senate Run

Attorney News

WilmerHale announced today that former US Attorney for the District of Colorado John Walsh has rejoined the firm as a partner in its Denver office following his run for US Senate.

With his return, Mr. Walsh, a highly skilled litigator, becomes part of a growing litigation powerhouse alongside accomplished litigator Regina “Gina” Rodriguez who joined the firm earlier this year. Mr. Walsh and Ms. Rodriguez give WilmerHale virtually unmatched strength to assist clients in the Mountain West and beyond with government and corporate investigations, crisis management, securities litigation, white-collar crime representation and other litigation-related issues.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to welcome John back to our firm,” said Susan Murley, co-managing partner of WilmerHale. “Anyone who knows John understands why his colleagues and our clients value him so highly. He is an exceptional lawyer and an equally extraordinary person. He and Gina make for a powerful litigation duo.”

“It was the opportunity of a lifetime to run for US Senate,” Mr. Walsh said. “Public service is crucially important to me, as it is to WilmerHale, which has a long tradition honoring such service by its attorneys and staff. For that reason and more, I am glad to be back at the firm and looking forward to working with some of the nation’s most impressive lawyers to solve our clients’ toughest problems.”

Before joining WilmerHale in 2017, Mr. Walsh’s six years as US Attorney for Colorado from August 2010 to August 2016 gave him one of the longest tenures in that post.

As US Attorney for Colorado, Mr. Walsh managed an office of 160 Assistant US Attorneys and staff in three locations as they conducted a wide variety of investigations into and prosecutions of sophisticated financial crimes—including investor and securities fraud, terrorism, international drug trafficking rings, healthcare fraud, human trafficking, and violent crimes. In a national capacity, he served as Chair of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee of US Attorneys, as Co-Chair of its subcommittee on white collar crime, and as Co-Chair of the Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities Fraud Working Group.

Mr. Walsh grew up in Denver. Before his appointment to US Attorney, he was a partner at two Denver law firms where he handled internal and government investigations and litigated securities, class action and commercial litigation matters across the United States. Earlier in his career, he served as Chief of the Major Frauds Section and as Assistant US Attorney for eight years in the US Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles.

Besides his focus in the Mountain West, Mr. Walsh will continue to devote considerable time to the firm’s successful and growing team and capabilities in California. He will work closely with former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and current WilmerHale Partner Alejandro Mayorkas, who served as US Attorney for the Central District of California from 1998 to 2001. Together with WilmerHale partners in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Palo Alto, Mr. Walsh will remain an integral part of the firm’s formidable strength in criminal litigation, internal investigations and crisis management that reaches across the nation.

Mr. Walsh earned his JD from Stanford Law School (Order of the Coif and with honors), where he served as the senior notes editor of the Stanford Law Review and president of the Stanford Public Interest Law Foundation. He earned his BA (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) in Political Science from Williams College. He is a graduate of Cherry Creek High School in Englewood, Colorado.

Mr. Walsh is an active member of Denver’s business and philanthropic communities. He was a member of the Colorado Chief Justice’s Commission on the Legal Profession, and has served on the boards of directors of Invest in Kids, Colorado Lawyers Committee, Faculty of Federal Advocates, and the Leadership Denver Alumni Association. He also has served on committees of the Colorado Bar Association and the Colorado Democratic Party.

A fluent Spanish-speaker, Mr. Walsh has worked extensively in the Latino community and on legal matters in Latin America, including serving on the board of the Escuela de Guadalupe in Denver, as co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Mexico Committee, and on the board of the US-Mexico Law Institute.
