Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP is delighted to announce the appointment of London-based International Arbitration Special Counsel Professor Maxi Scherer as Chair of the Drafting Committee and Advisory Board, responsible for the revision of the international arbitration rules of the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa (AFSA). London-based Partner Steven Finizio has been appointed to the Advisory Board, and Senior Associate Jonathan Lim will serve as Secretary to the Committee.
The Drafting Committee and Advisory Board, composed of leading academics, experts and practitioners from around the globe, have been assembled to revise and redraft AFSA’s current international arbitration Rules, which pre-date the passing of South Africa’s International Arbitration Act. Since the act, which incorporates the UNCITRAL Model Law, was passed in late 2017, AFSA’s international caseload has grown exponentially.
AFSA will release its new Rules during the Johannesburg International Arbitration Week in March 2020. Professor Scherer commented: “The New International Arbitration Rules will provide additional certainty and clarity to businesses trading across borders on the African continent and beyond and continue to make AFSA a highly attractive choice for parties in international arbitration proceedings.”
