Christopher M. Cherry, PhD

Counsel

Chris Cherry focuses his practice on post-grant proceedings, patent litigation and patent prosecution. Dr. Cherry has experience in inter partes review, interference and reexamination proceedings before the USPTO. He also has extensive experience in prosecuting patent applications in domestic and numerous foreign jurisdictions as well as formulating noninfringement and invalidity opinions and performing freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses. He has experience in drafting noninfringement positions and invalidity contentions and assisting in client counseling and inter partes and litigation strategy.

Dr. Cherry has worked with clients from a broad range of life sciences and technical fields, including molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, genome engineering, antibodies, diagnostics, biofuels, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, small molecules, gene editing, protein expression and engineering, personalized medicine and medical devices.

Dr. Cherry is a member of the Biotech Committee of the AIPLA, the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Issues Committee of the IPO, the Young Lawyers and Agents Committee of the PTAB Bar Association, and the IP Section Board of the Bar association of the District of Columbia.

Before joining WilmerHale, Dr. Cherry was an associate at two other law firms and spent time working as a registered patent agent. In 2009, he worked as a student intern at The Johns Hopkins University Technology Transfer Office. He received his PhD in biochemical, cellular and molecular biology from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His dissertation focused on the role of epigenetic regulators in the maintenance of stem cells within their endogenous niches.
