Accomplished IP Litigator Robert Galvin Joins WilmerHale's Palo Alto Office

Attorney News

WilmerHale is pleased to announce that Robert Galvin has joined its Palo Alto office as a partner in the Intellectual Property Litigation Group. Mr. Galvin brings more than 15 years of experience in IP litigation, and has a stellar reputation in Silicon Valley and beyond.

With a focus on intellectual property litigation for clients in the biotechnology and software industries, Mr. Galvin’s arrival further deepens the firm’s bench of first-chair trial lawyers. Along with his litigation experience, Mr. Galvin has substantial experience advising clients on licensing and antitrust issues.

“Rob is a highly skilled litigator and a natural fit for the firm,” said WilmerHale Co-Managing Partner William F. Lee. “His arrival expands our Palo Alto office’s footprint and extends the firm’s already-prominent national profile in life sciences patent litigation to the West Coast.”

“WilmerHale is a national leader in intellectual property litigation,” adds Mr. Galvin. “I am proud to join the firm and eager to collaborate with such a highly regarded team.”

Mr. Galvin joins WilmerHale from Howrey, where he had been a partner since 2009. During that time, he established a successful practice focusing on the representation of life sciences and software companies in intellectual property litigation in federal courts nationwide.

Before practicing at Howrey, Mr. Galvin was among the founders of Day Casebeer, where he practiced for a decade.

"Adding Rob’s notable experience and leadership to the firm marks another important step for our Palo Alto office as we continue to focus on the expansion of talent and service on the West Coast,” said Mark Selwyn, partner-in-charge of WilmerHale’s Palo Alto office and co-chair of the firm’s IP Litigation Group.

WilmerHale’s IP Litigation Group includes leading patent, copyright and trademark litigation teams backed by the academic and industry experience of more than 160 lawyers and technology specialists with scientific or technical degrees. It has been recognized as one of the best IP litigation practices in the nation, named by The American Lawyer as the “Intellectual Property Litigation Group of the Year” in 2008, and, most recently, by Law360 as a 2010 “IP Group of the Year.”

The IP Litigation Group is a significant component of WilmerHale’s Palo Alto practice. The Palo Alto office recently relocated to a larger space due to its ongoing strategic headcount increase, and has had notable growth and success since opening in 2005, expanding from two to more than 40 practitioners.

Mr. Galvin began his law firm career as an associate at Cooley LLP in 1994. Before that, he was a law clerk for the Hon. Stephen S. Trott of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He earned his JD from the UCLA School of Law in 1993, graduating first in his class, and received his BA from UCLA in 1990.
