The current market environment is proving extremely tough for private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC). So far this year, buyouts and investments are both down for PE and VC respectively, while tepid M&A and IPO markets are making some investors nervous about exit strategies. However, with near-record levels of fundraising, increasing numbers of distressed opportunities and more innovative firms looking for early stage investment, the picture is not quite so bleak.
