Lloyd R. Day Jr., one of the nation’s most accomplished IP litigators, has joined WilmerHale as a partner in the firm’s Palo Alto office. Mr. Day brings decades of experience trying high-stakes patent litigation cases on behalf of leading high-technology companies throughout the country. Recently, Chambers USA 2010 recognized Mr. Day as “one of the preeminent patent litigators in California, if not the whole country.”
“I’ve known Rusty as a friend, a colleague and adversary for two decades,” said WilmerHale Co-Managing Partner William F. Lee. “He is a first-rate IP litigator with exceptional trial skills. We are thrilled that he has joined our team.”
Mr. Day has represented clients in the United States and Europe in a range of cases involving genetically engineered biopharmaceuticals; small molecules; medical devices and diagnostics; computer networks; programming languages; data communications; and software platforms. He has also represented biotechnology, medical device and software companies in trial, appellate and US Patent and Trademark Office proceedings.
“I was drawn to WilmerHale’s IP Litigation Group because of its deep bench, history of outstanding results and reputation for integrity,” added Mr. Day. “I’m proud to join such an impressive group of lawyers.” Last month, Mr. Day’s former colleague Robert Galvin, another accomplished IP litigator, joined WilmerHale’s Palo Alto office, along with IP Litigation Counsel Geoffrey Godfrey; Senior Associates Susan Krumplitsch and Robert McAlhany; and Associate Dennis Wang.
WilmerHale also recently expanded its IP litigation practice in the firm’s Los Angeles office with the addition of Andrea Weiss Jeffries, formerly a partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP.
“This extraordinary talent further enhances our ability to serve clients in a wide range of industries from our Los Angeles and Palo Alto offices,” said Mark Selwyn, partner-in-charge of WilmerHale’s Palo Alto office and co-chair of the firm’s IP Litigation Group.
WilmerHale’s IP Litigation Group includes leading patent, copyright and trademark litigation teams backed by the academic and industry experience of more than 160 lawyers and technology specialists with scientific or technical degrees. It has been recognized as one of the best IP litigation practices in the nation, named by The American Lawyer as the “Intellectual Property Litigation Group of the Year” in 2008, and, most recently, by Law360 as a 2010 “IP Group of the Year.”
The IP Litigation Group is a significant component of WilmerHale’s Palo Alto practice. Since opening in 2005, the Palo Alto office has grown to nearly 50 lawyers.
Mr. Day was a founding partner of Day Casebeer Madrid & Batchelder LLP. Prior to that, he was a partner at Cooley Godward LLP, where he led the Technology Litigation Group. Mr. Day earned his BA from Williams College in 1974, and received his JD from the University of Chicago Law School in 1979.
