WilmerHale is pleased to announce prominent litigator George P. Varghese has joined the firm as partner in our Boston office. Mr. Varghese brings more than 14 years’ experience in serving as an Assistant United States Attorney in both the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the District of Massachusetts to the firm’s White Collar Defense and Investigations Group.

In his role as an Assistant US Attorney, Mr. Varghese managed investigations and litigation of complex criminal cases in matters concerning health care fraud, national security, economic sanctions, Bank Secrecy Act violations, money laundering, racketeering, cybersecurity, and theft of trade secrets in the office’s Health Care Fraud and National Security units.

Mr. Varghese has significant trial experience, trying more than 35 cases to verdict. He has served as lead counsel in a number of high-profile matters, including in the criminal prosecution of New England Compounding Center, the compounding pharmacy responsible for the 2012 nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak—the largest public health crisis ever caused by a pharmaceutical drug. “George is a top-notch litigator who is well-respected for his ability to lead complex criminal matters from investigation to trial,” said Susan Murley, co-managing partner of WilmerHale. “His addition to the WilmerHale team further strengthens our front line criminal, investigations and trial expertise.”

“I am thrilled to join WilmerHale’s team of impressive and highly-skilled litigators,” said Mr. Varghese. “The firm is known for getting positive results for clients facing high-stakes challenges, and I look forward to bringing my experience in leading government investigations to the team to further assist clients in achieving successful outcomes.”

Prior to joining the US Attorney’s Office, Mr. Varghese clerked for the Honorable Karen Nelson Moore on the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Before attending law school, he worked as an Investment Banker for Lehman Brothers and Allen & Company.

Mr. Varghese earned a BA in economics from the University of Chicago and graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he served as an Articles Editor for the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.
