The recent political backlash against globalization, a continued rise of protectionist policy, the securitization of tariffs and rising trade tensions have amplified the importance of understanding the rules of the trading system and international economic law. Meanwhile, the rise of digital technologies and new economic powers are testing existing systems and institutions and call for reforms and additions to existing rules. At its core, the pandemic brought about by COVID-19 has uncovered weaknesses and presented new challenges, yet also pointed to new opportunities for the global trading system. Urgent calls for reform have been coupled with questions about how to govern the future of trade. 

The Georgetown Law Institute of International Economic Law's virtual, five-day Global Trade Academy will explore the legal foundations of the global trading system, along with key FTAs, regional trade agreements and aspects of US trade law. Through presentations, interactive policy conversations, breakout sessions, and a simulation, participants will learn from leading experts about the origins of the system, as well as take a deep dive into cutting-edge developments and disputes shaping the global economy.
