This seminar will provide an overview of regulatory activities and the potential for litigation, since May 25, 2018, when the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) became fully applicable. Topics will include:

• the enforcement priorities of various data privacy regulators in the EU, including fines for non-compliance with the GDPR;
• trends on complaints brought by data protection activists in Europe and the expectations for next steps;
• the role of the European Data Protection Board;
• a report on individuals exercising their rights to obtain information about their personal data and how it is used;
• the different paths leading to litigation under the GDPR, including guidance on how you can prepare; and
• pending legislation that will introduce additional class action-type litigation in data privacy and consumer protection across Europe and in various member states.

Our speakers include partners from WilmerHale’s European offices who focus on data protection law and litigation. They have extensive experience defending US-headquartered companies in regulatory proceedings and national courts, and before the Court of Justice of the EU. This has included lawsuits brought by European and national data protection, telecommunications and antitrust regulators, as well as consumer protection organizations, competitors and individuals.
