Joseph J. Mueller

Joseph Mueller is a trial and appellate lawyer who concentrates on interdisciplinary cases that involve multiple substantive bodies of law, such as intellectual property, antitrust and competition law, and contract law; both litigation and regulatory work; and both US and foreign proceedings. He is skilled in considering the various substantive, procedural, and international variables in such matters, and crafting clear and consistent strategies for success. Mr. Mueller was honored as a 2019 “IP Trailblazer” by The National Law Journal for this multidimensional work.

Mr. Mueller’s trial experience is extensive and includes dozens of trials, with leading roles in many high-profile matters across the country. He has first-chaired important trials for top technology companies and won awards for his trial achievements, including being ranked as a leading lawyer by Chambers USA and honored as a “Winning Litigator” by The National Law Journal and as a “Litigator of the Week” by Litigation Daily. He has considerable appellate experience: he has argued before federal and state appeals courts including the United States Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Fourth Circuit, and Ninth Circuit. In addition, he has worked on projects involving a wide array of government agencies—both federal and state—and the formulation of policy strategies for interactions with those agencies.

Beyond his domestic practice, Mr. Mueller has in-depth knowledge regarding strategies for international litigations and regulatory proceedings. He has experience with courts and agencies throughout Europe and Asia.

Earlier in his career Mr. Mueller served as a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Special District Attorney in the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, where he prosecuted cases involving violent crimes, financial fraud, and many other offenses. While at the Middlesex DA's Office, Mr. Mueller tried a variety of cases to juries and judges.

Mr. Mueller has worked on significant pro bono matters involving issues such as disability rights, political asylum, detainee rights, and public school disciplinary procedures. He received the Boston Bar Association's 2007 "President's Award" and the firm's 2005 John H. Pickering Award for his exemplary pro bono service.
