Excerpt: Protection of personal data has been a concern for at least 25 years in the European Union (EU) and in Belgium, and a fundamental right in the EU for almost 10 years. Cybersecurity is a more recent concern, given the vital role digital networks and information technology systems and services play in society nowadays. Data protection laws include cybersecurity requirements, such as the obligation to keep personal data secure and transfer it only if it is adequately protected, but there are also specific cybersecurity laws that apply to critical infrastructure, even if it is not used to process personal data.
