On December 23, 2024, the City of Boston and the Boston Public Schools entered into and announced the signing of definitive deal documents (including a lease agreement and a stadium usage agreement) with the new Boston franchise in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) for a public-private partnership for the joint redevelopment and subsequent shared use of historic White Stadium. Once redeveloped, the modernized, professional-level stadium will continue to operate as the home of the Boston Public Schools athletics department and provide for robust year-round usage by student athletes and the general public, while also serving as the home venue for the NWSL franchise for up to 20 games each season, thereby making it the first stadium in the country to serve jointly as the home venue for a public school athletics department and a professional sports team. The parties are pursuing an aggressive construction timeline that aims to have the team playing in the stadium at the start of the 2026 NWSL season.
The WilmerHale team representing the City of Boston and the Boston Public Schools was led by Brett Jackson and Benjamin Unger, and included Douglas Burton, Robyn Casper and Armen Grigorian, with support from George Shuster on debt finance matters.
