Members of Hale and Dorr's Government Relations and Government Contracts Group recently assisted RSA Data Security, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Security Dynamics Technologies, Inc., with a new strategy for entering foreign encryption markets. Encryption, which scrambles data so it cannot be recognized by unauthorized interceptors, is heavily regulated as an export by the U.S. government. Working with the Commerce Department, Hale and Dorr assisted RSA in setting up an Australian subsidiary which will develop and sell strong encryption globally, including the first full-strength RSA security protocol product for world wide markets.
Attorneys who worked with RSA on this international trade strategy include Partner Jay Urwitz, Junior Partner Barry Hurewitz and Associate Karen Lowy Tinsky.
