This alert gives a high level overview of the new trading relationship between the European Union (‘EU’) and the United Kingdom (‘UK’) for goods and service supply. The transition period for the UK’s exit from the EU (‘Brexit’) came to an end on 31 December 2020. Since then the EU and the UK have been trading based on a provisional Trade and Cooperation Agreement ('TCA'), which has now been finally approved and entered into force on 1 May. In this alert, we set out the key background and the main changes. We then outline other key (and in some cases novel) aspects of the TCA system and structure. The alert is quite a long read (11 pages). We hope it is useful and a timely recap to the required changes and understanding the new relationship.
