Dr. Katrin Meschede is a counsel in the firm’s Regulatory and Government Affairs Department. She advises national and international companies on German and European competition and merger control law, with a focus on civil antitrust litigation and assisting clients in antitrust investigations of the German Federal Cartel Office and the European Commission. 

Before joining WilmerHale, Dr. Meschede worked for the Chair for Public Law, European Law and Public International Law at University of Cologne and the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

Dr. Meschede is a member of the Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht (Antitrust Law Society Germany).

Experience

  • Defending a German banking association before the Berlin District Court against a series of lawsuits brought by German retailers claiming damages from allegedly excessive merchant fees for the use of the German debit card system Electronic Cash / Girocard
  • Representing German sweets manufacturer Katjes Fassin and other sweets manufacturers in litigation before the Mannheim District Court concerning significant claims for damages from the “Sugar Cartel”
  • Representing Deutsche Bahn in litigation before the Frankfurt District Court and the Frankfurt Court of Appeals concerning claims for several hundred million Euros in damages from the “Railtrack Cartel”
  • Defending a German association of health care providers before the Dortmund District Court, the Dusseldorf Court of Appeals and the German Supreme Court against claims for damages from an alleged exclusionary rebate scheme
  • Assisting a major German automotive supplier in antitrust investigations of the European Commission and the US Department of Justice
  • Representing Heidemark, a German turkey producer, in appeal proceedings before the Dusseldorf Court of Appeals against a fine imposed by the Federal Cartel Office for an alleged participation in the German “Sausages Cartel”
  • Advising and representing a US oilfield service provider in securing merger control clearance from the European Commission and several competition authorities worldwide for the establishment of a joint venture
