Charlie Lightfoot is a partner in WilmerHale's International Arbitration Practice and brings more than 25 years of experience advising companies and governments in complex, high-value international disputes. His practice focuses on international commercial arbitration, with substantial experience in investor-State arbitration and disputes under public international law. He also has substantial experience in commercial litigation before the English High Court and in offshore jurisdictions, as well as other forms of alternative dispute resolution, including adjudication, expert determination and mediation. He is consistently ranked among the leading international arbitration practitioners in Chambers UK and The Legal 500 UK.

Mr. Lightfoot's work spans a wide range of industries, including defense and security, infrastructure, energy, life sciences, mining, telecommunications and entertainment. He regularly appears as an advocate in arbitration, has appeared before the English High Court, and also sits as an arbitrator. He has handled arbitrations across numerous jurisdictions and institutions, including the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), and has experience with claims under the Energy Charter Treaty. 

Before joining WilmerHale, Mr. Lightfoot chaired the international arbitration practice at another law firm.

Mr. Lightfoot is a frequent speaker and author on matters of international arbitration and public and private international law.

    • Represented a defense contractor in a $6 billion contract claim brought against a state entity.
    • Represented a West African state in a $1.8 billion dispute litigated through parallel arbitral proceedings.
    • Obtained an award exceeding $100 million for an oil major in Swiss Chamber of Commerce arbitration arising out of an M&A transaction.
    • Represented a claimant in ICC arbitration proceedings in London involving a contract dispute over Colombian gas fields.
    • Represented a party in LCIA proceedings involving a contract dispute over oil rights in the Gulf region.
    • Represented an Italian investor in an investment treaty claim against an Eastern European state involving real estate development.
    • Represented a defense contractor in an ad hoc arbitration arising from a state entity's termination of a contract.
    • Represented a Caribbean state entity in ICC arbitration proceedings in London involving a dispute with an industrial contractor.
    • Represented a claimant in Stockholm-seated arbitration proceedings involving a contract dispute that followed a foreign state's privatization of an industry.
