Maria Camila Hoyos

Senior Associate

Maria Camila Hoyos is a senior associate in the Litigation/Controversy Department and is a member of the International Arbitration Practice Group. She brings over a decade of multi-jurisdictional experience advising clients on complex cross-border disputes involving both common law and civil law systems across a wide range of industries. A fully fluent practitioner, Ms. Hoyos conducts advocacy in Spanish-, Portuguese- and English-language arbitrations. She also sits as an arbitrator.

Ms. Hoyos has represented clients in arbitrations conducted under most leading institutional rules, across industries and jurisdictions spanning Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Clients and peers describe her as “a strong advocate with an excellent reputation,” who “brings additional value to any team,” is “very focused, organized, and creative,” and “amazing at putting together case strategy.”

Recognized by leading industry publications for her thought leadership in international arbitration, Ms. Hoyos co-founded the Portuguese Very Young Arbitration Practitioners (PT-VYAP) network. She currently serves as the UK “Next Generation” Representative for the Latin American Arbitration Association (ALARB) and has held various leadership roles within the American Bar Association’s International Law Section.

Prior to joining WilmerHale, Ms. Hoyos practiced at leading international dispute resolution law firms in New York, Lisbon, and Bogotá, and served as in-house counsel for highly regulated Fortune 500 companies.

  • REPRESENTATIVE MATTERS

    • Represented a Brazilian subsidiary of a Canadian pulp and paper company in a post-M&A. dispute in three ICC arbitrations and parallel court proceedings in Brazil, England, and France. 
    • Represented a Brazilian company in two ICC arbitrations related to long-term supply contracts in the Middle East.
    • Represented a British Virgin Islands Group in an ICC arbitration arising from a failed M&A transaction in South America involving energy facilities.
    • Represented a US investor in an ICSID investment arbitration dispute against Peru arising from a long-term oil refining concession.
    • Represented two Portuguese construction companies in an ICC corporate shareholder arbitration arising from an alleged breach of the Shareholders Agreement.
    • Represented a US petroleum drilling company in an ICC arbitration arising from the breach of contract in a non-conventional petroleum development in South America.
    • Represented a Spanish renewable energy generation facilities constructor in an ICC arbitration with a Chinese contractor in a dispute arising from the operation of a photovoltaic module’s manufacturing factory in Europe.
    • Represented a Peruvian mining company in an ICC arbitration with US EPCM and EP contractors in a dispute arising from the design and construction of a copper concentrator and molybdenum plant in South America.
    • Represented a Canadian mining company in a UNCITRAL/ICDR arbitration with a US/Argentine-Italian joint venture contractor in a dispute arising from the construction, project management, and construction management of a mining project in South America.
    • Represented a Spanish/French waste management services company in a UNCITRAL arbitration against the Colombian Government in a dispute arising from the breach of a concession agreement for a sanitary landfill.
    • Represented a Spanish/French resource management, production, and delivery of water company in a UNCITRAL arbitration with the Colombian Government in a dispute arising from the breach of concession agreements for water management.
