The International Arbitration Club of New York has announced that Gary Born—chair of the firm's International Arbitration Practice—is the recipient of the 2014 Smit-Lowenfeld Prize for best article in the field of international arbitration published in 2012. He will receive the prize for his article "A New Generation of International Adjudication," which appeared in the January 2012 issue of the DukeLaw Journal. The article examines the use of international tribunals as an attractive alternative to traditional public-international-law adjudicatory bodies.

The prize will be presented to Mr. Born on Monday, January 22, 2014, at a dinner and program to be held in his honor at The University Club in New York City. The prize was awarded by a selection committee chaired by Rory O. Millson, a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP. 

"Gary's extensive experience in international arbitration is evident in this well-argued, forward-looking article," Mr. Millson said. "We are pleased to present the award to such an esteemed member of the arbitration community." The selection committee for the prize also included B. Ted Howes of McDermott Will & Emery LLP, Commercial Arbitrator, Mediator & Counsel James M. Rhodes, Daniel Schimmel of Kelley Drye & Warren LLP and Fred Sherman of Jones Day.

The prize honors the late professor Hans Smit of Columbia Law School and Andreas Lowenfeld, the Rubin Professor Emeritus at the New York University School of Law, for their distinguished careers in the field of international arbitration, both as scholars and as arbitrators. Article selection is based on originality, quality, significance and scholarship, among other factors. Honorees are selected annually by The International Arbitration Club of New York and are awarded an honorarium of $2,500.

The prize will be presented at the January event by Lawrence W. Newman, Presiding Member of the International Arbitration Club of  New York and Of Counsel at Baker & McKenzie LLP. "I understand that the Club's jurors were especially challenged in their review of the entrants for 2012 because of the very high quality of the articles submitted," said Mr. Newman. "We are pleased to be honoring the author of the winning article, Gary Born, who is a widely acclaimed author of many seminal works in the international arbitration field."
