Human Rights First proudly announces that WilmerHale will receive the 2025 Marvin E. Frankel Award, recognizing the firm’s outstanding pro bono contributions to protecting the rights of asylum seekers and other immigrants seeking humanitarian relief.

Named for the late Judge Marvin E. Frankel—a founder of Human Rights First and lifelong champion of human rights and pro bono service—the award honors law firms that exemplify his legacy through an unwavering commitment to justice and the defense of vulnerable individuals seeking refuge.

WilmerHale has provided life-changing legal representation to people fleeing political persecution, gender-based violence, and threats to their lives and safety. Over the past year alone, dozens of WilmerHale attorneys dedicated more than 5000 pro bono hours to asylum and other humanitarian cases through Human Rights First’s pro bono program, helping individuals navigate the complex U.S. immigration system with dignity and hope.

“WilmerHale’s partnership has been integral to our mission of ensuring that no one faces the asylum system alone,” said Uzra Zeya, President and CEO of Human Rights First. “Their dedication, compassion, and legal excellence have brought safety and stability to people forced to flee unimaginable danger. We are proud to honor them with the Marvin E. Frankel Award.”

The firm’s impact on the asylum system extends beyond individual representation. WilmerHale’s attorneys have also participated in legal trainings, led policy and advocacy efforts, and authored amicus briefs to help advance systemic reforms and protect access to asylum. Their long-standing partnership with Human Rights First reflects the best of the legal profession’s commitment to justice.

“WilmerHale has been a strong partner to Human Rights First and a powerful advocate for asylum seekers, providing pro bono support in more than 30 Human Rights First cases over the past year alone,” said Farida Chehata, Director of Refugee Representation at Human Rights First. “Their tireless advocacy and skilled legal work have led to life-changing outcomes for their clients. These victories are not only a testament to WilmerHale’s legal acumen, but also to the compassion and perseverance that their teams bring to every case.”

“We are honored to be recognized by Human Rights First, which has long been a leader in protecting and advancing the rights of asylum seekers,” said WilmerHale Pro Bono Counsel Erin Meyer. “Whether in securing safety for an Afghan family of five or reuniting a Gambian refugee with his daughter after a decade apart, it has been—and will remain—our privilege to partner with Human Rights First in this invaluable work.”

The Frankel Award will be presented at the 2025 Human Rights First Awards Celebration on October 14 at Gotham Hall in New York City.
