In Politico, George Varghese Explains Academia’s Reaction to DOJ Effort to Thwart Alleged Chinese IP Theft

George Varghese, a Boston-based partner, was mentioned prominently and quoted in an April 7, 2020 Politico article on the US Department of Justice’s initiative to counter what the piece described as alleged efforts by Chinese state-backed entities to steal intellectual property.

The article cites Mr. Varghese’s experience as a federal prosecutor in Massachusetts who worked on the case against a Harvard University professor who was arrested and charged with lying to federal authorities about Chinese funding of his research. 

Mr. Varghese noted that the DOJ’s initiative was forcing institutions of higher education and scientific researchers who have long valued collaboration with international colleagues to rethink their approach, especially when China is involved.

Mr. Varghese was quoted describing some of the questions university administrators are asking: “Part of it is just dealing with, ‘What should our policy and procedures be about this?’ Should we allow for foreign academic collaboration?’”
