Partner Gary Born was awarded the 2018 James Wilson Award by the University of Pennsylvania Law Alumni Society.

The James Wilson award is named for the signer of the Declaration of Independence and founder and first professor of Penn’s law school. Wilson helped shape the US Constitution, was an early Supreme Court justice and was the first Professor of Law at what is today the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

The James Wilson award is presented each year to a graduate of the law school and honors a lifetime of service to the legal profession. Previous recipients of the award include Marcia Greenberger, founder and co-president of the National Womens’ Law Center, and Nicolas Bratza, former president of the European Court of Human Rights.

Mr. Born, who chairs the firm’s International Arbitration Practice, is the world’s leading authority in his field. He has participated in more than 650 international arbitrations, including in London, Paris, Geneva, New York and Singapore. He has also been an important and prolific writer, authoring the definitive commentary on the subject: “International Commercial Arbitration.” He is based in the firm’s London office.

Following his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Mr. Born clerked for Judge Henry Friendly of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Justice William Rehnquist of the US Supreme Court.
