WilmerHale Senior Counsel James H. Carter has been elected Chair of the Board of Directors of the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC). NYIAC is a nonprofit organization founded in 2013 to promote and enhance New York as a leading hub for international arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Mr. Carter takes on this role after serving as a vice chairperson of the Board and a member of the NYIAC Executive Committee since NYIAC's inception. Mr. Carter has more than 40 years of experience as arbitrator or counsel in more than 150 international commercial and investment arbitration cases. He has served previously as Chair of the Board of the American Arbitration Association and President of the American Society of International Law.

In addition to Mr. Carter's role with NYIAC, WilmerHale is a founding firm of NYIAC, having joined 40 other law firms and bar organizations in providing seed money to fund NYIAC's operations. Gary Born, chair of WilmerHale's International Arbitration Group, is a member of the NYIAC Global Advisory Board, and John Pierce, partner in the firm's New York office, is a member of the Board of Directors.

Since its opening in July 2013, NYIAC has hosted dispute resolution hearings involving both international and US companies and has showcased New York's strengths in this high-value sector by sponsoring a variety of educational programs. The hearing center has hosted 67 arbitrations under a wide variety of arbitral rules, including those of the ICC, ICDR, AAA and CPR. The center has hosted two cases under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules involving claims by a foreign investor against a sovereign state. 

NYIAC is a nonprofit organization formed to advance, strengthen, and promote the conduct of international arbitration in New York. NYIAC operates a hearing facility at 150 East 42nd Street in Manhattan. NYIAC does not administer arbitrations, but rather provides hearing support services to arbitrations conducted under any institutional rules or conducted ad hoc.
