Paul Oberhammer is an of counsel in the Litigation/Controversy Department, and a member of the International Arbitration Practice Group. He joined the firm in 2011.

Practice

Professor Oberhammer is a leading expert in international litigation and arbitration, focusing on the laws of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. As an of counsel in WilmerHale’s International Arbitration Practice Group, Professor Oberhammer serves as an expert advisor and party representative in addition to his work as an arbitrator. He has participated as a legal expert, advisor, counsel or arbitrator in about 200 litigation and arbitration proceedings.

Legislative

Professor Oberhammer was previously chairman of the Reform Commission, which drafted the Austrian Arbitration Act of 2006. In 2012, he was commissioned with the review of the European Insolvency Regulation by the EU Commission.

Recent Highlights

  • Advising leading academic publisher Springer Science+Business Media (SSBM) in securing merger control clearance from the US Department of Justice, the European Commission and several further authorities worldwide for the combination of SSBM with the majority of Holtzbrinck-owned Macmillan Science and Education (namely Nature Publishing Group, Palgrave Macmillan and the global businesses of Macmillan Education) in a joint venture with approximately EUR 1.5 billion in annual revenues.

Professional Activities

Professor Oberhammer is a distinguished academic. He is a full professor at Vienna University, Austria. From 2003 to 2011, he taught at Zurich University, where he held the chair of Swiss and International Civil Procedure, Insolvency Law, and Civil and Commercial Law. From 2001 to 2003, he held the chair of Civil Law, Civil Procedure and Commercial Law at the University Halle-Wittenberg in Germany. In 2012, he became a permanent visiting professor at St. Gallen University, Switzerland.

Professor Oberhammer has authored more than 230 publications in the fields of arbitration law, civil procedure, and civil and commercial law.
