Van Handel, Michael

Michael Van Handel’s practice focuses on various aspects of patent law. Mr. Van Handel has represented clients in matters involving patent prosecution, litigation, post-grant proceedings and due diligence. He has experience in a variety of technologies, including computer networks, telecommunications, radio-frequency systems, content distribution and management, network security, software applications, and business methods.

Prior to joining WilmerHale, Mr. Van Handel was a student associate at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett, and Dunner, LLP in Washington DC, where he handled patent prosecution, litigation and post-grant proceeding matters. Mr. Van Handel also has experience as a primary patent examiner at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), where he served for nearly six years. Before his time at the USPTO, he was a radio frequency engineer at EchoStar Technologies.

At graduation from The George Washington University Law School, Mr. Van Handel was awarded the Chris Bartok Memorial Award in Patent Law. The award is given to the  member of the graduating class who exhibited excellence in the study of patent law.
