Wissmann, Matthias

Matthias Wissmann's practice focuses on the liberalization and deregulation of markets and industries and on legal counseling in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. He joined the firm in 1999 and was a member of the German Parliament for more than 30 years.

Most recently, Mr. Wissmann held the chair of the Committee of European Affairs. He previously served as Federal Minister of Transport in the German government and as Minister of Research and Technology. He also was President of the European Council of Transport Ministers. His efforts to liberalize the transportation sector culminated in the German-American "open-skies" agreement, which opened the American air traffic market to German air carriers. He also has significantly advanced the privatization of the German railway system and Lufthansa.

Mr. Wissmann advises and represents international companies in their major transactions in the energy sector and the cable net industry in corporate and regulatory affairs.

Professional Activities

Mr. Wissmann is President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), which currently has more than 600 member companies with a total of 800,000 employees.

He is Vice President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and President of the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers OICA (Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles).
