Hugh Murtagh, a partner and Chair of WilmerHale’s Bankruptcy & Financial Restructuring Group, advises companies, creditors, sponsors, financing sources, purchasers and other stakeholders on complex corporate restructurings and related disputes. His practice spans consensual refinancings, out-of-court workouts, liability management transactions, Chapter 11 proceedings, cross-border insolvencies, creditor enforcement matters and alternative wind-downs. Drawing on experience representing both debtors and creditors, Mr. Murtagh helps clients assess risk, evaluate strategic options and pursue practical solutions in high-stakes situations.

Mr. Murtagh has particular experience with counseling clients with respect to disputes, risk management and litigation arising from financial distress. He advises on a range of transaction structures, including debt-for-equity conversions, foreclosures, assignments for the benefit of creditors, liquidations and reorganizations. He also counsels boards of directors and senior management of financially troubled companies on fiduciary duties, corporate governance and related matters, and advises clients facing exposure to distressed counterparties.

Before joining WilmerHale, Mr. Murtagh practiced at two other AmLaw100 firms. He previously served as a law clerk to Judge P. Kevin Castel of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Hugh earned his JD, magna cum laude, from New York University School of Law and his BA from Yale University.
