Patrick J. Carome

Retired Partner

Patrick Carome, who retired from WilmerHale in 2022, built a nationally recognized practice at the intersection of media, internet and First Amendment law. Over more than two decades, he became known for handling complex litigation involving online platforms and emerging forms of digital communication with notable success in cases shaping the contours of intermediary liability and online speech protections. His practice also extended to privacy, defamation, copyright, trademark, trade secrets and access‑to‑information matters, and he regularly advised media organizations on press‑access rights, open‑records laws and other issues fundamental to newsgathering.

Beyond media and internet law, Mr. Carome handled significant civil litigation in areas such as Anti‑Terrorism Act defense and the immunities of international organizations, and he played key roles in major federal antitrust class actions. He was deeply engaged in professional organizations, including leadership roles within the Media Law Resource Center, the American Bar Association and the District of Columbia Bar, and he contributed as an adviser, speaker and author on topics involving internet law, online speech and government transparency. Earlier in his career, he served as a staff attorney for The Washington Post and as staff counsel to the US House Select Committee to Investigate Covert Arms Transactions with Iran—experience that helped shape his long dedication to defending legal principles central to the functioning of a free and open society.
