USCIS Issues Revised I-9 Form for Immediate Use

Publication

Yesterday, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services issued the long-awaited revised Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) for immediate use by all employers, and the accompanying revised M-274, Instructions for Completing the Form I-9. Employers are required to complete and retain a Form I-9 for each US employee. The revised form includes a reduced list of acceptable documents that may be used to confirm identity and work eligibility, finally bringing the form into conformity with the current requirements of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA). The revised form also adds the current version of the Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766) to List A of the List of Acceptable Documents.

Employers should begin using the revised form immediately and will be required to use only the revised form as soon as the notice is published in the Federal Register. The revised form and instruction booklet may be downloaded using the links below.
