Beverly Hills Weekly:
In June 2013, you were nominated by President Obama as the Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security. Tell us about your responsibilities in this role.

Alejandro Mayorkas:
The Deputy Secretary is the number two person who is traditionally regarded as the Chief Operating Officer of the department, making sure that it runs effectively and efficiently while also becoming very involved in certain policy issues. Some of the policy issues that I was very involved in, the counterterrorism portfolio, cybersecurity, some immigration matters, really ran the gamut. There are quite a number of agencies that comprise the Department of Homeland Security. There are about 22 agencies and offices ranging from FEMA, Federal Emergency Management, to TSA [Transportation Security Administration], to Customs and Boarder Protection.
