The Firm Continues to Mourn Founding Partners

Firm News

Founding Partner and friend, Lloyd N. Cutler, passed away on May 8, 2005, at age 87, after a long illness. He was one of America’s most distinguished public and private lawyers, whose career included serving as White House Counsel to Presidents Carter and Clinton, as well as a diverse and distinguished career as a lawyer in private practice, including actively pursuing the advancement of many civil rights causes.

Founding partner and friend, John H. Pickering, passed away at the age of 89 on Saturday, March 19, following a stroke. John was recognized for his brilliant legal work, his advocacy of pro bono service, his dedication to the cause of equal justice, protecting the rights of the elderly, and his promotion of the highest standards of ethics and professionalism in the law.

Lloyd Cutler and John Pickering shared a career-long friendship, and in 1962 they founded Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. Lloyd and John led the firm to international renown. The firm merged with Hale and Dorr in 2004, forming WilmerHale. In April 2004, Lloyd and John were awarded Lifetime Achievement in Law Awards at The American Lawyer's 25th anniversary celebration dinner for "distinguished careers as lawyers and public servants." Lloyd and John took enormous pride in the growth and development of every person in the firm. Our founding partners will be missed and we will always be thankful for all they gave to us and to our profession.
