Former Deputy Treasury Secretary Robert M. Kimmitt Returns to WilmerHale

Attorney News
WilmerHale is pleased to announce that Robert M. Kimmitt, who most recently served as Deputy Secretary of the US Department of the Treasury, will rejoin the firm as a senior international counsel. Kimmitt was previously a partner at WilmerHale from 1997-2000, where his work focused on international transactions in regulated industries, primarily in the areas of defense, aerospace, telecommunications and banking. He will join the Regulatory and Government Affairs Department and focus on global business, policy and regulatory matters.

“Bob brings a wealth of experience from his years with the government, in military service, at the senior levels of international business, and practicing law in Washington,” said Bill Perlstein, co-managing partner at WilmerHale. “His background will help us to strengthen our Regulatory and Government Affairs Department and enhance our ability to advise our clients regarding government and cross-border investment issues.”

As Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, Kimmitt was involved in all aspects of the formulation and execution of Treasury policies and programs, including major roles in the Department’s work with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) and in developing policies toward investment by sovereign wealth funds. His prior government experience includes serving as US Ambassador to Germany from 1991 to 1993, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, General Counsel to the Department of the Treasury, and Executive Secretary and General Counsel of the National Security Council.

In addition to his government service, Kimmitt served as Vice Chairman and President of Commerce One, and Executive Vice President for Global Public Policy at Time Warner.

“I am excited to be returning to WilmerHale,” said Kimmitt. “I am eager to be rejoining such a talented group and look forward to putting my government and business experience to work for our clients on their investment and regulatory issues.”

Kimmitt served in combat with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam, and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a Major General in 2004. During his service as Deputy Secretary and General Counsel to the US Treasury Department, Kimmitt twice received the Department’s Alexander Hamilton Award, as well as the Arthur Flemming Award for distinguished public service. For his work as the US Ambassador to Germany, he was awarded the US Defense Department Distinguished Public Service Award as well as Germany’s Order of Merit. And for his service as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs during the Gulf Crisis and War, he earned the Presidential Citizens Medal, the Nation’s second highest civilian award.

Kimmitt earned his BS with distinction from the United States Military Academy and his JD from Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as Editor in Chief of Law & Policy in International Business. From 1977 to 1978, he served as law clerk to Judge Edward A. Tamm of the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit.

In addition to his work at WilmerHale, Kimmitt recently joined Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, as chairman of its newly created Center for Cross-Border Investment (CCBI).
