Louis Tompros, a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice and the Hieken Lecturer in Patent Law at Harvard Law School, was interviewed in Harvard Law Today’s article, “Las Vegas Athletics Were Denied Trademarks, but Counterfeiters Beware.”
In the piece, Tompros discusses the US Patent and Trademark Office’s preliminary refusal to register the trademarks “Las Vegas Athletics” and “Vegas Athletics” for the Major League Baseball team currently known as the Oakland Athletics, ahead of its planned relocation to Las Vegas.
He explains that while trademark registration provides additional legal protections, brand owners can still rely on common‑law trademark rights, and notes that the team may appeal the ruling and ultimately establish trademark ownership as consumers begin to associate the team with Las Vegas.
