At the American Bar Association’s Annual Meeting on July 29, WilmerHale Partner Stephen Preston delivered remarks remembering founding partner John Pickering. Each year the ABA Senior Lawyers Division presents an award honoring “the life and accomplishments of John H. Pickering, an outstanding lawyer who was involved in a variety pro bono activities and law-related societal issues affecting the elderly.” At this year’s award presentation, conducted virtually, Preston spoke about Mr. Pickering on behalf of the firm.
“John was known for taking a personal interest in the younger lawyers,” Preston said, “and he drilled in us the conviction that we were undertaking an honorable profession – one requiring the highest standards of ethics and integrity – and with that came a solemn commitment to service for the public good.” Noting that Mr. Pickering was 70 when they met and went on to practice for another 19 years, Preston continued, “we are all fortunate to have John as a model, an example to follow – a testament to the impact that those advanced in their careers can have on the profession and the world around us.”
