Arthur Shum's practice includes patent prosecution, patent reexaminations and IPRs, and intellectual property litigation.

Mr. Shum has prosecuted patent applications in a range of technology areas, including computer networking, wireless communications, physical consumer goods and Internet applications. Mr. Shum has also been actively involved in multiple patent reexaminations and inter partes reviews in front of the USPTO dealing with power generation and distribution technologies, cryptography and authentication technologies, and laser-sustained plasma light sources. Mr. Shum's practice also includes litigation of patent rights in federal courts.

Recent practice highlights include being part of teams that:

  • litigated two related patent infringement suits regarding automobile technology to trial in federal court, both of which resulted in favorable settlements;
  • obtained a favorable outcome in an inter partes reexamination regarding wind turbine technology before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB);
  • prosecuted patents and developed patent strategy for a medical devices company, a mountain safety equipment company, and a quantum cryptography devices company; and
  • conducted pre-litigation due diligence for a semiconductor devices company.

Past Experience

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Shum worked as a corporate summer associate with Debevoise & Plimpton, LLP in New York. From 2007-2009, Mr. Shum was a business analyst with McKinsey & Company in Toronto, Ontario.
