WilmerHale was honored by Law360 in the Trials category of its 2023 Practice Groups of the Year awards, which honor the attorney teams behind litigation wins and major deals that resonated throughout the legal industry this past year.

As noted in the profile accompanying the recognition, WilmerHale's trial team worked on some of the most nationally significant cases in the country and litigated several cases with billions of dollars at stake.

Hallie Levin and Joe Mueller, co-chairs of the firm’s Trial practice, detailed a particularly special win for which the WilmerHale team obtained a preliminary injunction in Ohio against the state's six-week ban on abortions on behalf of Planned Parenthood and other providers. The case, still ongoing, receives national attention and leaves a lasting impact on abortion rights in a post-Dobbs climate.

"We're really, really proud of that case, both because of the merits of the suit itself and the legal work that it took to achieve that victory, but also as just another sign of the commitment to pro bono and public service," Mueller said. "It's really part of what makes the firm what it is."

In 2023, the team took about 30 cases to arbitration or trial. “I'm so proud of the firm because it's really taken the assets of our community, our people, and brought them together in a way that has … really taken our practice to the next level," said Levin.

The Trial group worked on several critical matters for household name clients, including Apple, Dropbox and Gilead Sciences. The complex, high stakes matters required knowledge across groups.

"You've got intellectual property, classic contract dispute and a government-facing dispute, and our team reflected that," Mueller said. "We had folks with government expertise, we had folks with intellectual property expertise … It's just a great example of people from different backgrounds coming together to address these interdisciplinary cases."
