Durkin, William J.

William Durkin maintains a sophisticated criminal and civil practice focusing on representing clients in connection with governmental litigation and investigations. He provides advice and support to clients in responding to subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and inquiries from federal and state regulators and law enforcement, including the Department of Justice, Securities and Exchange Commission, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Massachusetts Securities Division, and state attorneys general. Mr. Durkin assists clients with internal investigations, including conducting witness interviews and other fact development, and has experience assisting clients with cybersecurity matters.

He also represents clients in complex commercial litigation in federal and state court, as well as before administrative agencies, at the trial and appellate level. 

In 2015, Mr. Durkin served as a special assistant district attorney in Middlesex County. In that position he prosecuted a variety of criminal offenses, trying cases before judges and juries.

Mr. Durkin maintains an active pro bono practice, including the representation of veterans before the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and Physical Disability Board of Review.

Past Experience

Prior to joining WilmerHale, Mr. Durkin served as a law clerk to the Honorable James Milkey of the Massachusetts Appeals Court.

During law school, Mr. Durkin was an intern in the Administrative Law Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. There, he counseled and represented state agencies in litigation in state and federal courts. Additionally, Mr. Durkin was a member of Georgetown’s Appellate Litigation Clinic, in which he briefed appeals in the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit and in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

Mr. Durkin was a summer associate in the Washington and Boston offices of WilmerHale in 2009. Before law school, he completed an internship for a political and crisis communications firm.

Honors & Awards

Mr. Durkin was named a 2017 "Rising Star" by Massachusetts Super Lawyers for general litigation.
