December 20, 2016

Who's Who Legal has ranked seven Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr lawyers in its inaugural listing of the "Future Leaders of International Arbitration": Partners Rachael Kent, Franz Schwarz and Duncan Speller; Special Counsel and Professor Maxi Scherer; and Counsels Michelle Bock, Sarah Ganz and Helmut Ortner.

Respondents describe Rachael Kent as "an extraordinary diplomat, who deals with people in a way one could only aspire to. A very effective advocate – really excellent." Duncan Speller received similar high praise and is said to be "phenomenal; extremely effective and doing exceptionally well." Sarah Ganz is praised for her “sharp mind” and is described as an "amazing lawyer."

In addition, Franz Schwarz and Maxi Scherer were identified amongst the "Most Highly Regarded Individuals" under 45 in the world, from a list of almost 600 names.

Maxi Scherer, who is also a Professor in International Arbitration at Queen Mary University of London, was ranked top five overall and number one in the list of non-partners. She is deemed a "thought leader in the field of international arbitration," recognized for her "strong combination of practice and academia" and described as "one of the best upcoming arbitrators."

Franz Schwarz is acclaimed as one of the "Most Highly Regarded Individuals" globally in the partner category. He is described as "highly respected," with one respondent noting that "he gave one of the best cross-examinations I have ever seen."

The "Future Leaders of International Arbitration" 2017 edition is the first time Who's Who Legal has identified the leading practitioners under the age of 45, including non-partners, based on strict peer review standards. Its sister publication, Who's Who Legal: Arbitration, has long recognized several of our lawyers as leaders in the field: Gary B. Born, James H. Carter, Steven P. Finizio, Rachael Kent, Paul Oberhammer, John V. H. Pierce, Maxi Scherer and Franz Schwarz.
