Former, Current WilmerHale Partners Elected to American Law Institute

Attorney News

Partner Mark Fleming, a member of the Litigation/Controversy Department and the Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation and Government and Regulatory Litigation Practices, was recently elected to the American Law Institute (ALI).

Also elected to the ALI this year was former WilmerHale Partner Paul A. Engelmayer, who is currently a judge in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Engelmayer was partner-in-charge of the New York office for many years, and left in September 2011 to take the bench. Fleming and Engelmayer join a long legacy of WilmerHale attorneys, former and current, to be elected to the ALI.

ALI is the leading independent organization in the US producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize and otherwise improve the law. The Institute drafts, discusses, revises and publishes Restatements of the Law, model statutes, and principles of law that are influential in the courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education.

ALI President Roberta Cooper Ramo said, “Our process for electing new members is extensive and careful. We are always striving to ensure that we look at issues from all viewpoints. After scrutinizing the backgrounds and credentials of this impressive new group of members, I am confident they will make tremendous contributions to ALI's work for years to come.”

The elected membership of ALI consists of judges, lawyers and law teachers from all areas of the United States and from many foreign countries, selected on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law. The total membership is 4,353, including the 68 newly elected members.

Fleming and Engelmayer join 14 other former and current WilmerHale attorneys who are ALI members, including former Co-Managing Partners William F. Lee and William J. Perlstein; current Partners Molly S. Boast, Gary Born, Russell J. Bruemmer, James H. Carter, Jamie Gorelick, A. Stephen Hut, Jr., Lori A. Martin, James L. Quarles, III and Seth P. Waxman; and Senior Counsel Louis R. Cohen. Retired Partner John C. Christie, Jr. is also an ALI member.
