WilmerHale, one of Boston's premier law firms, organized a biennial morning Career Day for Cathedral High School students on April 10. Professionals from a wide variety of career fields and industries spoke in small group panels across 15 classrooms at the school's South End campus. Students review the panels offered and choose those most interesting to them.

Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston, Dr. J. Keith Motley, launched the day with a keynote address for Cathedral High School student body before they went off to meet with leaders from industries as varied as social work and law to the arts and emerging technology. During his address, Chancellor Motley encouraged students to pursue their desired careers despite difficulties. "I told folks when I was in college that I was going to become a college president ... They laughed at me," explained Dr. Motley, who is now the head of a university with more than 15,000 students.

Among the 50 panelists were several alumni including:

  • James Carmody, vice president of Seaport Hotel from the class of 1971, and
  • James Hooley, chief of Boston EMS and 1972 Cathedral alumnus.

Others who presented included:

  • WBZ Anchor Paula Ebben,
  • Aquitaine Group Partner Jeffrey Gates,
  • Boston Main Streets Program Director Stephen Gilman,
  • Boston City Councillor Tim McCarthy,
  • WilmerHale Partner Jack Regan,
  • Gaslight Brasserie Chef de Cuisine Michael Zentner, and many others.

Cathedral High School is a designated philanthropic partner of the WilmerHale law firm. The two organizations also collaborate on other initiatives including an annual summer internship opportunity for selected Cathedral High school students and college application workshops for seniors each fall.

All of these partnerships help fulfill Cathedral High School's mission of preparing students for success in college and leadership in a 21st century economy. Cathedral High School is an urban, multicultural, independent, Catholic, college preparatory school in Boston's historic South End serving boys and girls of all faiths from grades seven through 12. Rooted in gospel values, we prepare students for college and leadership in a 21st century economy.
