Thomas E. Anderson Joins WilmerHale's Intellectual Property Department

Attorney News

WilmerHale is pleased to announce the arrival of Thomas E. Anderson as partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Department. Mr. Anderson joins the Washington DC office with more than two decades of experience in the engineering and legal fields.

Mr. Anderson joins the firm from Hunton & Williams LLP in DC, where he was most recently a partner. His practice focuses on securing, managing and enforcing domestic and foreign intellectual property rights; preparing opinions on intellectual property-related assets; and counseling clients on a broad range of intellectual property-related matters. His experience includes performing complex patent prosecution before the US Patent and Trademark Office; managing asset procurement and utilization efforts for multiple client IP portfolios involving patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret rights; counseling clients on matters including IP asset acquisition, management, transactional, enforcement and litigation matters; and handling all aspects of complex IP litigations and related issues before US federal courts and the US International Trade Commission.

“We are pleased to welcome Tom to the firm,” said David Cavanaugh, a vice chair of WilmerHale’s Intellectual Property Department. “His engineering background and full spectrum experience in representing clients on IP issues is a great fit for our firm and its clients. We couldn’t be happier to have him on the ground here in DC, where we are focused on growing our presence in this area.”

WilmerHale’s Intellectual Property Department offers a combination of specialized legal and technical skills normally associated with boutique intellectual property firms, and the broad business and litigation capabilities of a major general practice firm, for which it is often recognized. Most recently, the firm was ranked by Chambers USA 2011 in the top tier on a national level, as well as in the California, DC and New York rankings, while the inaugural 2010 “Best Law Firm” rankings by US News & World Report and Best Lawyers in America also ranked WilmerHale’s IP practice in the first tier nationally.

“I am happy to be a part of WilmerHale,” said Mr. Anderson. “The IP and IP litigation capabilities the firm offers are top-notch, as is the full range of practices that are well known in DC and nationally.”

Previously, Mr. Anderson was an associate at Jenkens & Gilchrist PC (1997-2000) in DC, and at Weingarten, Schurgin, Gagnebin & Lebovici LLP (1995-1997) in Boston.

Mr. Anderson has nearly a decade of experience in engineering. While earning his BS and MS in electrical engineering, he worked for General Electric Company initially as engineering co-op and later as a staff design engineer. He earned his BS from Rochester Institute of Technology, his MS from Syracuse University and his JD from Seton Hall University School of Law. He is a member of the New York, Massachusetts and District of Columbia bars, and is licensed to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
