WilmerHale Partner Brent Gurney has been selected as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL), one of North America's top legal groups. Gurney was inducted into the college at its 2017 annual meeting this past week in Montreal, Quebec. 

"I'm honored and humbled to be inducted into the college," Gurney said. "The accomplishments and careers of the other members make them the best of the best. I look forward to working with fellow members on issues concerning the administration of justice and other substantive matters—work for which the college is well known and highly regarded."

The ACTL honors trial lawyers from the United States and Canada. Fellowship is by invitation only to those "who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality," the ACTL says. Consideration to become a fellow requires at least 15 years' experience. 

As a trial lawyer, Gurney has significant jury trial and other experience handling complex civil and criminal cases across the United States. Most recently, he played a key role in representing the Baltimore and Chicago police departments during the Department of Justice's high-profile civil rights investigations of those departments.

Before private practice, Gurney served as an assistant US attorney for the District of Maryland, and was later appointed Deputy Chief for the Southern Division. In those roles, he prosecuted money laundering and healthcare, mail, wire and government contracts fraud, as well as numerous other crimes.
