Kate Thornton focuses her practice on government-related litigation and investigations, with a particular emphasis on congressional investigations. She has experience representing clients in parallel proceedings involving multiple government entities and maintains a broad crisis management portfolio. Recent highlights include: 

  • representation of a major financial institution in connection with a US Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations inquiry regarding physical commodities holdings;
  • representation of a leading news publication in connection with a US House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing on Americans detained in Iran, specifically concerning one of the publication's journalists;
  • representation of a global financial institution in connection with cross-border criminal and congressional proceedings involving allegations of offshore tax evasion; and
  • representation of a prominent research university in connection with parallel US House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and US Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs inquiries.

While attending law school, Ms. Thornton served as a volunteer with the University of Virginia School of Law Pro Bono Partnership with Hunton & Williams LLP, providing free legal services to low-income victims of domestic violence.
