WilmerHale Partner Presented With Paul P. Brountas Award

Attorney News

On Friday, November 9, 2007, WilmerHale partner James Quarles was awarded the Paul P. Brountas Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the Firm. The Paul P. Brountas Award recognizes the special contributions of an individual to WilmerHale.

During Co-Managing Partner William Lee’s remarks, he stated that Mr. Quarles “represents precisely the values that should define us culturally and reputationally: he is an excellent lawyer, he is an extraordinary hard worker, he is the ultimate team player, he treats everyone with respect and collegiality. He always, always puts the firm first and himself second.”

Mr. Quarles is a partner in the Litigation Department and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. He joined the firm in 1975 and is a former managing partner of Hale and Dorr’s Washington office. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Quarles was appointed as an assistant special prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force and served from 1973-1975. Recently, Mr. Quarles successfully defended STMicroelectronics in two patent infringement cases in front of the ITC in the past two years, and, together with William Lee represented Broadcom Corporation in a series of highly publicized disputes involving patent infringement with Qualcomm Inc.

The award is named after Paul P. Brountas, an honored partner who contributed greatly to Hale and Dorr. The award was a Hale and Dorr tradition that has carried over to WilmerHale. Mr. Quarles is the second WilmerHale recipient.
