We are pleased to announce that Laurie M. Stegman, former Special Counsel to the Director of the Division of Enforcement at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has joined the firm. Ms. Stegman is now a Partner in the firm’s Securities Department in its Washington office.
Ms. Stegman joins WilmerHale after serving over four years as Special Counsel at the Division of Enforcement (Division) of the SEC. During her first year with the Division, Ms. Stegman served as Special Counsel to the Deputy Director, participating as a member of teams that received Chairman’s Awards for Excellence in connection with work on Regulation FD and the Commission’s Auditor Independence rules in 2000. During the following three years, she acted as Special Counsel to the Director, drafting speeches and advising the Director on a range of Division policies and positions. She received the Commission’s Arthur F. Mathews award for her work in this capacity.
Ms. Stegman’s experience in securities is full-spectrum, as it is not only gained from her extensive work with the SEC, but also from her more than five years of practice in securities enforcement, internal investigations and broker-dealer regulation with Wilmer Cutler & Pickering prior to joining the SEC staff. During this time she represented major broker-dealers in investigations run by the SEC, the Department of Justice and the NASD.
Ms. Stegman graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School in 1993, where she was a Note Editor of the Michigan Law Review and a member of the board of the University of Michigan Law School Student Funded Fellowships. Following law school, Ms. Stegman clerked for the Honorable Robert S. Gawthrop, III in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Duke University, graduating cum laude in 1987.
