Matthias Wissmann

Senior International Counsel

Matthias Wissmann's practice focuses on the liberalization and deregulation of markets and industries and on legal counseling in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. For nearly 11 years, until the end of February 2018, he was President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). Before that, he served as member of the German Parliament for more than 30 years. Most recently, Mr. Wissmann held the chair of the Committee of European Affairs. He previously served as Federal Minister of Transport in the German government and as Federal Minister of Research and Technology. He also was President of the European Council of Transport Ministers. His efforts to liberalize the transportation sector culminated in the German-American "open-skies" agreement, which opened the American air traffic market to German air carriers. He also has significantly advanced the fundamental Rail Reform in Germany and the privatization of Deutsche Lufthansa. Mr. Wissmann has been a member of the firm since 1999.

Professional Activities

Mr. Wissmann was President of the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers OICA (Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles) from 2016 - 2019.
