Welcome to LA!

Welcome to LA!

Blog Savannah Carnes

sa-blogger-carnesHello, and welcome to my blog! Throughout the summer I will be sharing my experiences as a summer associate in WilmerHale’s Los Angeles office. As a San Francisco Bay Area native, I am thrilled to explore LA and meet the people of WilmerHale.

Los Angeles is a big city, and I mean really big. Four million people are spread out over 469 square miles and 114 neighborhoods. The city’s size and diversity mean that in a single day you can go surfing in the morning, eat Korean bibimbap at a strip mall for lunch, and close the night out with drinks at a speakeasy. But some people remain skeptical of what LA has to offer and question my desire to move here. In explaining LA’s appeal, I skip over the city’s rich history and cultural significance and go straight to the people. People move to LA because they have a dream to make something of themselves and to be a part of something bigger. That passion is invigorating. And if the skeptics remain unmoved, I haven’t even begun to tell them about LA’s food scene!

My first interaction with the people of Los Angeles was at the WilmerHale office. My first-day jitters were immediately put at ease by how welcoming and kind everyone was. My two fellow summer associates and I quickly bonded. The two rock star attorneys supervising the summer program worked with us to assign projects we were passionate about. Attorneys and staff introduced themselves to us and were genuinely interested in getting to know us. My new colleagues were just as enthusiastic about the city as I am. They gave me recommendations for the coolest roof-top bar (Perch), the tastiest lunch at nearby Grand Central Market (Eggslut), and a nearby nature escape (Echo Lake).

My brief time at WilmerHale has reinforced exactly why I am so excited to be a part of this team. The LA office has the best of both worlds by being a small office within a large international firm. The small office encourages people to form tight-knit relationships with each of their coworkers, while having global support and reach. It’s all this that makes me thrilled to be here: I am excited by both the work and the prospect of building a life here.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join the WilmerHale team and look forward to sharing more about my summer experience in the weeks to come!
