Welcome to my blog! My name is Sharon Kelleher, and I am a rising 3L at Harvard Law School. This summer I will be sharing my experiences as a summer associate in WilmerHale’s Boston office. While it’s early in the program, I can already feel time flying by, so this blog will be a wonderful way to build in reflection time and will hopefully be useful to those reading!
Since finals ended in early May, I have been excitedly and anxiously waiting to start the summer program. An older classmate recommended I take the period between finals and the program to rest because the 10 weeks would be filled with hard work, meeting new people, and lots of food. I took her advice and spent two weeks seeing friends and family and recovering from the end of the semester. After two weeks, I felt refreshed and ready to start a new adventure.
On our first day, in addition to starting to learn more about the logistics of the summer program, we spent a large chunk of our time getting to know the other summer associates and our summer co-chairs, Maggie O’Grady, Jess Lisak, Jason Kropp and Eric Fletcher. Mark Ford, the Boston office hiring chair, started the morning with a heartfelt introduction to the firm. He described his initial decision to join WilmerHale and how the firm has positively influenced his career in ways he could not have imagined. It was moving to hear about Mark’s experience and a great way to start the first day of the summer. On a lighter note, we each recited a fun fact about ourselves to the group. From Jeopardy fans to Quidditch players, our group brings many different interests to the program.
Between trainings during the first few days we also had a chance to meet our associate mentors over lunch. The associate mentors are here to guide us through the program, in a nonevaluative mentorship. I appreciate that WilmerHale builds this into the program because it gives us a chance to ask questions we may not otherwise feel comfortable asking and provides us with a go-to person. Additionally, because the associate mentors have recently participated in the summer program, they can supply us with endless advice about the best lunch spots.
After work on Tuesday of the first week, a few of the summer associates and attorneys participated in the annual Lawyers Have Heart 5K benefiting the American Heart Association. It was definitely a highlight of the week! After the run, we joined hundreds of attorneys from across Boston for beer and burritos and celebrated our very own WilmerHale champ, David Westenberg (photo below). It was wonderful to see the Boston legal community’s commitment to a great cause.
Toward the end of the first week we received our first projects. In just two days, I drafted a legal research memorandum and observed a client call. If that is any indication of what is to come, this summer will be packed with interesting work and new experiences! I am grateful for the chance to explore my interests and look forward to assisting teams in a variety of practice areas during the summer.
