This is the end of the second week of work for the summer associates here at WilmerHale Boston, and it's been an exciting mix of work and social events. The 22 summers have prepared for depositions, written memos, drafted terms of service, ensured compliance with regulations, attended case team meetings and much more. Many of us will be working on unemployment benefits pro bono cases with Greater Boston Legal Services, and we are involved in many other pro bono matters as well. Our summer project co-chairs, a group of two partners and two counsel, check in with us daily about what new types of work we want and make sure that we are able to try working in the practice areas that we'd like to explore. We typically begin assignments by meeting with the assigning attorney, who explains the matter to us in detail, and then going back to our offices, which each of us shares with one other summer, to work. After the theory-based classroom learning of law school, it has felt good to dig into real legal matters.
The summer legal recruitment team has gone out of their way to make sure this is an enjoyable summer for us. Last week they hosted a welcome reception at a bar on Boston Harbor, and about 80 WilmerHale attorneys came out to share a glass of wine and chat with us about their careers and our ambitions. When assigning us work, the attorneys are very friendly and interested in getting to know us and making sure we feel comfortable at the firm. A couple of nights ago the summers went to the North End, where Italian chefs at Taranta Restaurant taught us to make mozzarella, gnocchi, ham stuffed with vegetables and tiramisu. After sending us on a scavenger hunt around the North End to gather ingredients, the chefs walked us through preparing a delicious meal, which we then sat down to eat. It was a great way for us to get to know each other and the co-chairs and recruitment coordinators who cooked and ate with us. We're all excited about continuing to work on our projects, and about watching the Red Sox beat the Phillies on June 13th.
